My work often explores physical displacement, evolutionary dislocation and re-imagined realities. We live in a time where art has been made more available than ever, but the same platforms which allow for its circulation can also alter its intent. How does paint as a medium navigate this digital void?
This body of work deals with notions of home, transitional places and what constitutes a natural space. I am captivated by the way a place can transition from natural to man-made to a domestic space, and the way an object can represent that same transition, as it accrues experience and is imbued with memories over time. These images act as metaphors for clothing-as-armor and antagonistic landscapes. The raw wood is dressed with images from memory, and those images resolve differently at different scales.
Soph’s artistic practice evolved over many years across a multitude of media, including installation, illustration, mural painting and sculpture. No matter what base form it builds upon, be it a wall, a fabric, the page of a book, an object, or a wooden surface — Soph’s work creates an autonomous space which offers a multitude of possibilities in terms of colour and pattern, repetition and association, all in perfect coherence.
Her travels inform her work, from incidental details to capturing the broader passage of time. Her sense of beauty is expressed by taking full advantage of the innate qualities of materials she uses, which are sometimes modest, but are always combined following principles of scale and proportion.
To have a new vision of the future, it has always first been necessary to have a vision of the past. She re-imagines new realities from primal forms, linking evolution and examining humanity’s place within the natural world.
'Logic Chromatic' presents a kaleidoscopic reality of being in a nowhere land, but it is still a world that expects definition.
