Unseen Matter (Opulenz) . Haw Par Villa Remix . Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre . 2019
Sequins, pearl pins on styrofoam . Silicone bands . Enamel paint on wood
Curated by Kult Studio & Gallery . Assisted by Suhana Shahril, Sherlyn Chua
Referencing the style of 山水 (Shan Shui) depicting mountains, water and winding paths, the installationparallels that with Haw Par Villa’s textured entry points. An experience - take a walk throughsequin-coated mountains and a suspended silicone chain-link waterfall and examine intricate abstract expressionist paintings.
Materials used are tactile in nature, and cannot be fully experienced, understood or felt through the lens of a camera; such as blowing against the sequin mountains, or the titillating touch of the waterfall against your skin. As such, the artist expresses fear of loss of tactility in the real world, as we merge with technology, while evoking feelings of intimate connections through the juxtaposition of mundane materials against universal elements.
