Spray paint on marine ply
It can be rather intimidating to create an artwork knowing that it’ll live in one’s home, growing with its occupants; it serves to invite further contemplation, insight queries and understanding, serves as reminders, cultivate visual literacies and beyond. Beyond a merely object of decoration. It serves as a way of bonding a living and breathing space where the mundane is and can be beautiful, shifting as experiences are lived and lives enriched.
I can’t be more grateful for the patience, understanding and freedom my collectors have entrusted me. This painting has evolved in small increments thorough out its year of making. I have gotten used to the mad rush when it comes to art making in the Singapore climate. there are always datelines to meet and bills to pay (yes, artists have bills too!) time has become a luxury in this cog we’ve been educated to participate in. with their patience, I was able to take time to collect and recollect my years of constant learning, experimenting and reflections onto the artwork.
The softness we feel when we’re embraced. be it from a kin or a chosen kin, hugging for 20 secs ensures a healthy heart. it soothes both the heart aches and stresses in trying times, assuring one that “it’s gonna be alright” and “you are adored”.
Having lived 40 years and spent a good half of that traveling and living in multiple cities, my work fluctuates and shifts from elaborate illustrative abstract portraits to simpler abstraction. It’s not high brow whatsoever but more about stripping down to the fundamentals of how some toddles captures shoft shapes in the biginning and their vision sharpens as they grow. It is a reminder that we’ve to be reminded of our natural beings born into this world only to be shaped and molded by the external circumstances. I was drawn to collecting whatever my eyes can see, touch and feel. Now that I’m more settled in 1 place and have great company in my life, it is about zooming into these eleborate weaves and stripping them back to it core, further expanding and exploring. It is up to us as a society to seek, figure out what lies in our collective histories, ahead of us and make sound informed choices.
Thank you for reading. When you’re ready, go out and embrace someone you love (with consent ofc) or embrace yourself if you’re missing that someone.
